I received the following email from Neil Thompson of Byron Software on 7 Apr 2009.
Dear Geoff,
Handicap calculations for 2009 include some small changes as we have now
considered variation curves on data from several sources, including the
latest RYA returns, IRC, Echo and French systems as well as data from
the USA. Our web site will be updated to include the appropriate changes
for 2009 hopefully in the not too distant future.
Based on the information provided for Class/Boat: Skipper 17 :CSC- Vera
Causa, the displacement sailing handicap is 1197 with a uSA/Disp ratio
of 24.47 and a displacement hull speed of 5.19 knots.
It is noted that the vessel has a roller reefing headsail but does not
have a spinnaker nor any form of spinnaker/wisker pole.
Based on the low displacement/length ratio this type of vessel
theoretically can surf hence a lower handicap may be appropriate in
force 4/5+ conditions , however, without the aid of a spinnaker the crew
would need to be 'large and athletic' to even approach a handicap such
as 1100.
Regards
Neil Thompson
